Asking the specific individual what their preferred term is really is the thing to Animal Crossing Bells do, and taking a survey of disabled people to find out exactly what most preferred term is if you need to use it more generally (everything I have seen does indicate it leans towards handicap first, but on reflection I acknowledge, that may just be the preference of these active online for whatever reason), which explains the reason why a survey would be the thing to do, definitely not labels indicated by almost any non disabled person, no matter how far phycological experience they could have.
Ok, could the people in the health care field actually ask'people with disabilities' about that please? This really smacks of individuals trying to hard to be inoffensive (rather than paying any attention to the folks they are so afraid of offending), such as saying African American, when if you ask almost everyone in that community, they prefer to be called Black. Only to be 100% clear, if you missed my other comment concerning it, I'm a handicapped person myself.
